During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fortunately, we found the generous hearts of The Salvation Army. They helped us with food every week (using correct COVID-19 protocols), they offer free used clothing and other household items, including a microwave to replace ours when it had broken. They offer daily lunches to those in need. My favorite part of the lunch is the prayer before we eat. If you have a prayer request, you may fill out a small form to be read by the pastors. They don't force religion on you but instead, offer you God's Salvation with open arms should you want to attend Christian based services. They give out free winter hats, scarves, gloves, & mittens as well as winter coats. They run the Red Kettle program every winter and out of this donated money, 0.82 of every $ 1.00 goes back into the organization towards helping the needy! I could go on all day about how they help the world so go check out their websites! So to their siteWhen you donate items you no longer need to a Salvation Army Thrift Store, you’re giving a gift to someone in your community. The clothing, furniture, household goods, and appliances are resold to the public at a very low price. It’s a chance to recycle and support people who need a second chance.
The proceeds from every sale are used to fund our no cost, no insurance necessary Adult Rehabilitation Centers (ARC) located throughout the Midwest. Each year, The Salvation Army helps more than 150,000 people nationwide combat alcohol or drug addiction. We provide a safe, compassionate place where people can heal. By taking care of all their basic needs, the participants can focus their energy on getting better.
Our holistic addiction program includes having ARC participants work within the stores that cover the cost of their treatment. It enables them to provide for themselves, build and improve social skills, and achieve employment goals.
Families who live at or near the poverty line also rely on our thrift stores. Many of them purchase children’s clothing, shoes, books and toys—because little ones grow so quickly! In the winter, they shop our selection of coats, boots, hats and blankets to keep warm. The cost savings allow them to stretch their budget and put money toward other things such as food, housing and bills.
When a disaster such as a tornado or apartment fire takes place, we issue credit vouchers to our stores, so survivors acquire much needed items and start rebuilding their lives. Sometimes people come to us with nothing but the clothes on their back, so we provide immediate assistance. Other times survivors need a few items to make their situation a little more bearable.
Please keep us in mind when cleaning out your closet, attic, basement or storage unit. New or gently used donations are accepted daily at the Donor Welcome Center inside each of our stores. If you have furniture or a large quantity of items, pickup services may be available in your area.
Our Donation Value Guide helps you determine the approximate tax-deductible value of more commonly donated items. The Army’s doctrine follows the mainstream of Christian belief and its articles of faith emphasise God’s saving purposes. Its objects are ‘the advancement of the Christian religion… of education, the relief of poverty, and other charitable objects beneficial to society or the community of mankind as a whole.’*
The movement, founded in 1865 by William Booth, has spread from London, England, to many parts of the world.

The rapid deployment of the first Salvationists was aided by the adoption of a quasi-military command structure in 1878 when the title, ‘The Salvation Army’, was brought into use. A similarly practical organisation today enables resources to be equally flexible. Responding to a recurrent theme in Christianity which sees the Church engaged in spiritual warfare, the Army has used to advantage certain soldierly features such as uniforms, flags and ranks to identify, inspire and regulate its endeavours.
Evangelistic and social enterprises are maintained, under the authority of the General, by full-time officers and employees, as well as soldiers who give service in their free time. The Army also benefits from the support of many adherents and friends, including those who serve on advisory boards.
Preaching the Gospel
Leadership in the Army is provided by commissioned officers who are recognised ministers of religion.
All Salvationists accept a disciplined and compassionate life of high moral standards which includes abstinence from alcohol and tobacco. From its earliest days the Army has accorded women equal opportunities, every rank and service being open to them and from childhood the young are encouraged to love and serve God.
Raised to evangelise, the Army spontaneously embarked on schemes for the social betterment of the poor. Such concerns have since developed, wherever the Army operates, in practical, skilled and cost-effective ways. Evolving social services meet endemic needs and specific crises worldwide. Modern facilities and highly-trained staff are employed.
Flood relief in Mozambique
The need for modern facilities and longer-term development is under continual review. Increasingly the Army’s policy and its indigenous membership allow it to cooperate with international relief agencies and governments alike.
The movement’s partnership with both private and public philanthropy will continue to bring comfort to the needy, while the proclamation of God’s redemptive love offers individuals and communities the opportunity to enjoy a better life on earth and a place in Christ’s everlasting Kingdom.
The Salvation Army is currently led by General Brian Peddle, who was elected as the 21st General on 3 August 2018.Readers Digest: 12 Month Subscription
